PROGRAM
Choral Singing
NABGC members are taught to appreciate their voices as musical instruments. They are taken through a comprehensive routine including regular rehearsals and performances. Each rehearsal includes a thorough warm-up. During rehearsals, the basic aspects of singing are covered: good posture, correct breathing, tone production, clear diction, etc.
Young Heroes
NABGC members learn songs, poetry, and narration to help tell the stories of young people like themselves who helped to shape the United States through their involvement in the social justice movement in the 50’s and 60’s.
Internship
The purpose of the internship program is to provide a pathway for interested NABGC members to learn the skills needed to become a choir director. In addition, the choir is looking at its future, including succession. Because the NABGC has a unique approach to educating members of the Harlem community, the best person to receive the baton would be someone who has risen through the ranks of the organization.
Financial Literacy
This part of thee program is designed to help NABGC members develop a healthy relationship with money. They are taught the basics of finance as it relates to banking, investing, and entrepreneurship.
Musicianship
By learning music theory, sight-singing, and basic keyboard skills, members are able to learn songs faster and have a good understanding of how music is put together.
Spring Concert
The NABGC spring concert is where its members get to showcase what they learned throughout the season. The program consists of Classical, folk, and popular songs. This event gives the members an experience of participating in a polished performance with professional sound and lighting technicians. Accomplished musicians are often invited to perform with the choir.
5K Walk
The annual 5K Walk involves NBAGC visiting sites that represent the contributions of Black and Latino Americans. In addition, members get to see changes in the community from the year before.
